The start of the 2026 academic year in South Africa has been marked by a mix of significant administrative improvements and familiar frustrations. While the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) aimed for a "stable start" by completing the majority of funding decisions before the year began, many students still find themselves in a precarious position due to payment delays and registration blocks.

A Push for Efficiency Meets Reality

At the beginning of January 2026, NSFAS leadership announced that nearly 894,000 applications had been processed—a proactive move intended to prevent the chaos of previous years. The scheme successfully disbursed approximately R3.6 billion to universities and R679 million to TVET colleges for upfront payments in February.

The Primary Causes of 2026 Delays

Several factors have contributed to the late arrival of allowances this semester

1. Registration Data Backlogs

- NSFAS disbursements are strictly tied to the accuracy of registration data provided by institutions. Delays    often occur when there is a mismatch between the student's status on the NSFAS portal and the         university’s internal records.

2. The "Incomplete" Loop
Over 200,000 applications were flagged as "incomplete" due to missing documents, such as parental     consent forms. This created a feedback loop where students could not receive funds until their status was     manually updated.
3. The Accommodation Cap Crisis
A major sticking point in 2026 has been the R45,000 annual cap on accommodation. Many students, particularly at institutions like the University of the Witwatersrand, have found themselves "funded but blocked" because the cap does not cover the full cost of residence, leading to outstanding debts that prevent final registration.
