APS Score
How do I calculate my APS score?
Convert your Matric final percentages (six best subjects, excluding Life Orientation at most universities) into points: 80–100% = 7, 70–79% = 6, 60–69% = 5, 50–59% = 4, 40–49% = 3, 30–39% = 2, 0–29% = 1. Sum these points for your total APS. Always check each university's unique formula before applying.
How do I calculate my APS score for UP (University of Pretoria)?
UP uses all seven subjects including Life Orientation (LO counts max 1 point). Points: 80–100% = 7, 70–79% = 6, 60–69% = 5, 50–59% = 4, 40–49% = 3, 30–39% = 2, 0–29% = 1. Add the points for all seven subjects — no bonus points. Example: English 70% (6) + Maths 65% (5) + … + LO (1) = total APS.
Is an APS score of 22 low?
Yes, 22 is below average for most SA bachelor's degrees. Competitive courses like engineering, medicine, and law require 30+. Many universities require 24–26 for bachelor's access. A score of 22 may still allow entry to higher certificates, extended programmes, or diplomas at institutions like UNISA or TVET colleges.
Where can I study with 20 APS?
With 20 APS, focus on TVET colleges, higher certificates, or extended programmes. Consider UNISA (certain certificates), University of Limpopo (extended courses), Sefako Makgatho, Walter Sisulu University, or private colleges like Boston City Campus. Always verify programme-specific requirements as some diplomas may accept 20 APS.
NBT Tests
When can I write my NBT test?
NBTs are offered from April to October annually — key sessions run in May, June, July, August, September, and October. Register early at nbt.ac.za. For 2026 university intake, aim to write by August/September. Check your university's deadline; health sciences and engineering often require NBTs before application closing.
How much does an NBT test cost?
As of 2025, the AQL test costs R195 and the MAT test R195 — total R390 if writing both. Fees may change. Pay online during registration at nbt.ac.za. Fee exemptions are available for qualifying applicants. No refunds are given for missed tests.
What happens if I miss my NBT date?
You can register for a later test date if space permits. No refund is given on the original fee. Late registration may be possible but depends on availability — contact the NBT office immediately. Missing all deadlines can negatively affect admission, especially for competitive programmes like medicine or engineering.
What is a fail in the NBT?
NBTs don't have a strict "fail". Results are benchmarked: 1–29% (basic), 30–59% (intermediate), 60–100% (proficient). Some universities consider below 40% insufficient for certain courses. You may retake the test after 6 weeks. A "fail" means not meeting the required proficiency level for your chosen programme.
Application Fees
Which universities have a free application fee?
Several SA universities offer free online applications including UJ, UFS, UWC, NWU, NMU, Walter Sisulu University, and Central University of Technology. Always confirm current fees on the official university website as policies change annually. Some universities offer fee waivers for applicants with financial hardship.
What is a university application fee?
A university application fee is a non-refundable payment submitted with your application. It covers administrative costs — processing documents, verifying qualifications, and assessing your application. In South Africa, fees range from R100 to R300. Paying does not guarantee admission. Some universities waive the fee for online applications or financial hardship.
Prospectus & Funding
What is a university prospectus?
A university prospectus is an official guide detailing courses, admission requirements (APS, subjects), fees, campus facilities, and application procedures. For SA students, it's essential to check faculty-specific requirements (e.g., Maths vs Maths Literacy). Usually available as a free PDF on the university website and updated annually.
Do I need to apply for NSFAS separately?
Yes. NSFAS requires a separate application via my.nsfas.org.za. You must be a South African citizen, registered or accepted at a public university or TVET college, and have a combined household income of R350,000 or less per year. Apply as early as possible — NSFAS applications typically open in September and close in November.
